Retreats are More than a Weekend; Camp is More than a Place.

Have you ever thought about what camp (especially summer camp) is really all about?  The official dictionary.com definition is, “providing facilities for sleeping and eating, and usually for handicrafts, sports, etc.”  After being at Rock Mountain Bible Camp for eleven summer seasons camp is so much more than that!

First let me give you some facts about what kids are doing today.

A week of camp provides kids with more than 10,000 minutes away from the pressures of daily life, in a beautiful, natural setting with trusted adult role models.

So, what is camp?  While camp is a “place that provides facilities for sleeping and eating, and usually for handicrafts, sports, etc.,” Camp is more than a place.  It is a catalyst to ignite and sustain a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ, the Lord of salvation.   Camp is where you can get away (retreat) from the hustle and bustle of daily life where ever you are and get a chance to experience relationships with God and others.  Camp is where kids may arrive empty but go home full…Camp is so much more than a place!

Kids, and for that matter everyone, need camp.  Today, like never before, kids, teens, and pre-teens are under tremendous pressure.  Camp provides opportunities for youth to pull away and get a breather – to catch a vision for the bigger picture of their lives.  In the natural environment of camp, youth come face to face with a God that loves them and experience new adventures, make new friends and walk closely with Jesus.

So, is camp more than a place that “provides facilities for sleeping and eating, and usually for handicrafts, sports, etc.?”  I know personally it is for me and my family.  My sons (3) of them started coming to camp before I joined the ministry.  They would come home after a week of camp exhausted but changed individuals.  Two of them declared Jesus as their Lord and Savior while attending camp.  There is something about getting away and being at camp that allows the camper to re-focus and develop. I am extremely thankful for that!  I dare you; go away on a retreat or to summer camp, and let God speak to you in the still small voice.  I am confident that you will be changed.
